Today was our first day of (non) school for Spring Leaves and the start of our fifth year together. (!!) And what a scorcher it was. After the July we had here on Pender Island, who'd have guessed we would have to cut our first-day-back picnic short because of the intense heat and sunshine!
Some old friends are gone (returned to school), and we miss them. We had some new visitors today ... a wonderful family contemplating joining us. They fit right in, and certainly enjoyed today's highlight during gym time: parachute games!
We then toured the school garden and picked calendula blossoms. We're going to dry them a bit, then soak them in olive oil for six weeks. The infused oil will then be medicinal in itself, but we're hoping to learn how to make salve from it.
At Medicine Beach, we discussed a few ideas for the year (next week's Soup for Somalia fundraiser, our intergenerational video project with kids and elders). Then Bryce (Mr. Woollcombe — 2 O's, 2 L's, an E at the end), our Spring Leaves Tuesday morning teacher, dropped by to share some of his ideas for the Spring Leaves TLC (Tuesday Learning Club). The most exciting one for me is taking our classroom (er, the art room) off grid!
Then, all suitably stung or fried, we left for cooler pastures. Not that we were complaining or anything. ;-)
